BLACKBURN, LANCASHIRE — ARCHITECTURE ACROSS THE UKDISCUSS A PROJECT ↗
PROJECT 01 / GRADE II* / YORKSHIRE DALES

Stockdale Cottage.

Making the architecture part of the landscape.

THE BRIEF

A simple request.
A considered solution.

The client wanted to move between the Grade II* listed cottage and a detached barn without having to put on wellies or carry an umbrella.

An obvious extension between the buildings would have introduced a new built connection and changed the character of their setting. The challenge was finding another way.

THE IDEA

An architectural link,
not an extension.

The route and new accommodation were conceived within the ground, with landscaped roofs, dry-stone retaining walls and carefully controlled openings. The objective: make the intervention respond to the topography rather than compete with the historic buildings.

IN DETAIL

The thinking becomes
the drawing.

The process is visible in the elevations: existing landscape, proposed intervention and the relationship between separate buildings.

THE POINT OF THE PROJECT

Good design doesn't always need to announce itself. Sometimes its greatest strength is knowing where to be quiet.

PENRITH's approach was developed for the particular buildings and place. Listed building and planning matters must be assessed on their individual facts.
